The Journey of Lent

Some people only celebrate the happy times in Jesus’ life: Christmas, Palm Sunday, and Easter. But as followers and friends of Christ, we should also retreat with Him into the wilderness beginning on Ash Wednesday, watch and pray with Him on Maundy Thursday, stand by Him at the cross on Holy Friday. Mark these services on your calendar so that you can whole-heartedly join in the journey Christ took to give His life for you – and invite friends, neighbors, co-workers and family to these powerful services about God’s amazing grace, mercy and love for all of us!

I’ve heard about Lent, but what is it?!

The church season of Lent is 40 days from Ash Wednesday to Easter (not counting Sundays) symbolizing the 40 days that Jesus fasted and prayed in the wilderness. Lent is more than a time to give up something, such as chocolate (which your director of worship could never do!), no, think of it as a designated time given to dwell on the new life and hope that we receive because of the death of Christ – the death which paid for our sins and took on our guilt and shame. For these 40 days, use this as a time through personal study, meditation and prayer to:

  • Remember God’s gift of love and grace for us through Jesus Christ
  • Reflect on Jesus’ crucifixion and His sacrifice of His life for us
  • Examine your personal life, gaining insight into your personal problems and needs
  • Confess your sins, repent and seek forgiveness, and forgive others
  • Experience sacrifice in a personal way by giving up some favorite food, personal habit or defensive behavior
  • Desire God’s will and direction in living healthy, holy lives
  • Seek spiritual growth, healing and renewal
  • Strengthen your faith and commitment in your daily walk with Jesus
  • Come out of the darkness of the tomb into the glorious light of Christ’s resurrection!

Palm Sunday Celebration
Come for a morning of celebrating the entrance of our Lord and King into Jerusalem! It is also a time that we will also prepare ourselves for the passion (the suffering) of Christ.
